Beaded Skulls – Artist’s View

Inspired years ago by Mexico’s Huichol Indians beading technique, I applied their concept to my first cow skull in 2000. Each seed bead is hand placed into a wax base material on the skull. Thousands, to tens of thousands, of beads are hand set in each piece.

Recently, I have begun to incorporate different size and types of beads in my skulls as I explore the infinite possibilities of design. Depending on the complexity of the piece, there may be anywhere from 40 to 80 hours spent in the beading process alone.

Note: It is important to acknowledge that the Huichol Indian’s art is considered sacred. Their designs relate to their tribe’s religious symbols. At no time are their symbols borrowed or used in my beaded skulls.
